Great review of Thuya tints. Colors and mixes

Thuya is one of the most loved and in-demand dyes among brow artists. It is ideal for beginners and suitable for coloring after long-term brow lamination. In this article, we will look at what Thuya dye is, its color system, and the most popular mixes.

Hey cuties! Beauty Hunter is back in touch and we’ve missed you! Have you missed us?

And today we’re reviewing one of the coolest Thuya eyebrow and lash dyes. Color nuances, work hacks, color theory, and top mixes. So, shall we get started?

Thuya - TOP dye for eyebrows and eyelashes

Brow tinting is one of those procedures where the result depends not only on the brow artist, but also on the quality of the dye used. In the beauty market there are dozens, if not hundreds, of brow dye brands, each unique in its own way. But in brow artists’ hearts, there are usually only a few manufacturers that are easy to work with and consistently deliver great results.

Thuya is a dye from an Italian brand that can be called revolutionary. Thuya dye has several advantages compared to other brands:

  • Wide color palette of 9 shades;
  • Long shelf life - 12 months after opening (not every dye can boast this);
  • Perfect for brow tinting after long-term lamination;
  • Long-lasting and very convenient for beginner brow artists;
  • Gives a soft, clean imprint on the skin without darkening the hair;
  • Can be used for eyelash tinting.

How can you not fall in love with such a brow dye?

One of the main features of Thuya dye is that it is a low-pigmented and long-acting colorant. This means that its reaction does not happen within the first 2–3 minutes like in permanent fast-acting dyes, but takes longer. Because of this effect, the product is recommended for beginners, since even if you overprocess it on the brows, they still won’t turn unnaturally black, which is very important.

There are two types of oxidizer for mixing the dye: liquid and cream. With oxidizers, you can control the texture of the mixture and the working speed of the dye. For example, with a liquid oxidizer the reaction is faster and the consistency is more fluid; a cream oxidizer has a more prolonged oxidation effect (very convenient for beginners) and a denser texture, which can even be applied in layers on the brows.

That is why most artists prefer working with a cream oxidizer.

Helpful hack - Thuya dye works perfectly through a thin layer application.

Color theory of Thuya dye

Now let’s move on to the color theory of Thuya eyebrow and lash dye. The Thuya palette includes 9 shades with their own color nuances and depth levels.

Level of depth - a scale of color saturation and lightness. There are 10 levels of depth, from 1 - the deepest black, to 10 - the lightest blonde. Knowing the hair depth level on the brows and the dye’s level, you can choose the perfect shade without darkening.

Thuya shade palette

Let’s go through each shade from the lightest to the darkest:

  • Light brown, perfect for warm blondes (base yellow-green pigment at level 7);
  • Ash Brown - milk chocolate for cool and ash blondes (base violet nuance at level 7);
  • Brown - classic brown for girls with light brown or olive undertones in hair and skin, essentially about half of Slavic-type girls (base green pigment at level 5–6);
  • Chestnut - a reddish tone. In its pure form it is almost never used, but it is ideal for mixing with other shades to achieve the desired color (base red pigment at level 5–6);
  • Taupe Grey - grey-brown taupe can be used in its pure form if the client has soft, non-porous hair and wants a cool brown, almost graphite brow color (base low-pigmented soft violet nuance at level 3);
  • Graphite - cool grey color. Mostly used as a mixing tone to mute or cool down the main palette shades (base blue-green nuance at level 3);
  • Violet Black - indigo (black-violet), not used in pure form as it has a strong violet undertone, but ideal for mixes to achieve a more neutral or cool shade (base intense violet pigment at level 3);
  • Bluish Black - blue-black, suitable for lash tinting or as a mix tone for the main palette (base intense blue pigment at level 2);
  • Deep Black - deep black, suitable for lash tinting or as a mix tone for the main palette (base blue-violet pigment at level 2).

Popular Thuya dye mixes

Of course, for a beginner brow artist, the full 9-shade palette is not really needed, and in pure form you will rarely use the shades. That’s why most artists wonder which mixes are the most popular and suitable for different client types.

  1. Light Brown and Ash Brown. Milk chocolate and light brown together create a neutral, beautiful, clean blonde. This shade is perfect for blondes.
  2. Chestnut and Brown. Chestnut and classic brown together create a beautiful neutral brown shade, ideal for brunettes and brown-haired clients.
  3. Light Brown and Graphite or Violet Black. Light brown mixed with graphite or violet-black gives a neutral blonde, but only if a small amount of the dark pigment is used. The more dark cool pigment is added, the darker the hair becomes.
  4. Light Brown + Ash Brown + Chestnut. Mixing light brown, milk chocolate, and chestnut in a 40:40:20 ratio gives a beautiful light ginger shade.
  5. Light Brown + Brown + Chestnut. Mixing light brown, classic brown, and chestnut in a 40:40:20 ratio gives a rich ginger color.
  6. Light Brown + Brown + Chestnut. Light brown and chestnut mixed in different proportions give a ginger shade with a reddish undertone. This is perfect for girls with bronze or dark ginger hair.
