How to protect yourself from coronavirus? FAQ for artists

Today we’re going to talk about something important — our health and safety. The wave of coronavirus news has taken over everything around us and raises many questions, which we will answer today.

Hello beauty hunters!

Today we’re going to talk about something important — our health and safety. The wave of coronavirus news has taken over everything around us and raises many questions, which we will answer today.

The first thing to start with is calmness and a rational view of the situation. Panic is not our helper, so let’s get together, beauty hunters — we are strength.

How to protect yourself from coronavirus?

Despite quarantine, clients are not planning to stay without beautiful brows, lashes, and makeup.
When it comes to disinfection in beauty salons and studios, it is always important to treat it with special attention and responsibility. This is the safety of our clients, guests, and, first of all, our own personal safety.
Ask your clients to take their health and yours seriously and, in case of any illness, to cancel their appointment and see a doctor. This can be done either by you personally or by the salon (studio) administrator.

What can protect against viruses?

Let’s go through the main safety measures for a master and their workplace:

  1. Hand and surface disinfection
  2. Sterilization of tools
  3. Protective measures when interacting with a client
  4. Disinfection of the premises

What to use to disinfect hands and surfaces?

Viruses and infections can be present not only in the air but also settle on various surfaces and then easily be transferred by hands to mucous membranes and further into our body. According to specialists, the virus can remain on a surface for up to 9 days! So the first thing we need to take care of is frequent washing and disinfection of hands and working surfaces. Not to mention that hands must always be disinfected before working with a client, and disinfectant products should be available in the salon at all times and kept within easy reach.

Disinfectants come in different types depending on their purpose:

  • for disinfecting surfaces and tools;
  • for hand disinfection;
  • universal products.

Products containing propanol (at least 35%) or ethanol (85%) are suitable: AHD 2000, Sterillium, BioLong (Biolong).
AHD 2000 - a universal product, suitable for treating hands, surfaces, and tools.
Sterillium is ideal for hand disinfection, does not dry out the skin and has no strong odor.
BioLong produces both skin antiseptics and universal products used for hands, surfaces, and tools. It should be noted that allergy sufferers should be careful when choosing this product, as it has a strong scent and fumes.

In addition to hand disinfection, it is important after working with each client to wipe down working surfaces with antiseptic and disinfect tools.

Sterilization of tools in a beauty salon or studio

A dry-heat sterilizer or autoclave is our reliable assistant and protector in work. An ultrasonic cleaner for tools is also a useful device for a beauty studio. All tools must go through dry-heat sterilization. Before that, they need to be cleaned and soaked in a disinfectant solution Blanidas Active (an ultrasonic cleaner can be used here), dried, and packed into a special kraft bag, and then safely placed into the “oven”.
By the way, brushes are an exception — these little things simply would not survive such treatment. For brushes, there are special cleaners (for example, Express Brush Cleaner) that also have antiseptic properties. And of course, regular washing of brushes is also a must.

Protection from viruses when working with clients

ARVI and viral diseases are transmitted via airborne droplets and through contact with mucous membranes. Stock up on three-layer masks and gloves. A mask is a good way to protect against viral diseases during close contact with a client. However, it should be remembered that three-layer masks do not provide long-term protection and should be changed at least every couple of hours, and gloves — after each client.
Three-layer masks are also very useful psychologically when working with clients. They act as a kind of barrier that allows you to work comfortably in the client’s personal space.
Unfortunately, against coronavirus itself, regular three-layer masks are not very effective. Higher protection is provided by masks rated N95 or higher with a HEPA filter. At the same time, there is still a risk of infection through the eyes and conjunctiva.
But how to protect the eye mucosa? The National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine recommends instilling 2–3 drops of a Decamethoxine solution (0.2 mg/ml) 4–6 times a day during the epidemiological risk period.

Sterilization of a beauty salon or studio space

After taking care of disinfecting your workplace surfaces, you can think about how to clean the entire room. The space must be wet-cleaned every day, and a plan for general cleaning or sanitation days should be created. The highest level is UV treatment of the premises. Of course, quartz lamps are more common in cosmetic centers, while they are rarely found in beauty salons and studios. But now is the time to consider purchasing such a device for your studio. Quartz treatment is done after wet cleaning, for 5–15 minutes, and no one should be in the room during that time.

All of the above measures will help you make your work comfortable and safe. And most importantly, do not allow panic, be attentive to your health, and love your work.
